How to Properly Maintain Your Gym Equipment?

Gym Equipment Maintenance

Introduction

Having fitness equipment at home is a great investment. It allows you to work out whenever you please, without worrying about the weather, or whether or not you will find parking or hit traffic spikes. It saves you on gym memberships, and because quality equipment is long-lasting, it pays itself off quite fast. If you have some necessary gym equipment essentials such as bench, dumbbells, and barbells, it can last you for years, if not decades.

But, having gym equipment at home has one flaw—you need to do maintenance. Commercial fitness equipment at your local gym is not your worry, they do the repairs and cleaning for you. But, at home, it is a different story. Here is our short gym equipment maintenance checklist:

Tip #1: Keep It Clean

There are a few reasons why most commercial gyms insist on clients having towels, and hygiene is not the only one. Yes, stinky and sweaty equipment will turn a gym into a pig stove quickly, but it will also damage the equipment.

Human sweat is abrasive, and if it remains, it can damage the material on the benches, but also corrode the weights. Dust can also damage equipment, but can also affect you. When you exercise, your breathing rate increases, which means you will inhale all that dirt.

So, when you exercise, use a towel, and make sure to wipe out everything behind you with paper towels. Also, once per week vacuum the whole place, and disinfect surfaces. That will keep the equipment long-lasting and functional.

Tip #2: Maintain Your Machines

If your home gym has cable machines, you need to do regular maintenance. All moving parts should be oiled/greased once per month. That will ensure a smooth operation. Pay attention to weight stack bars, those need to be well-lubed.

Also, you need to replace cables and resistance bands. For cables, once per year is optimal, but more often if you use them heavily. As for the bands, it depends, but if you notice them getting thinner, get new ones, they are not that expensive. This will ensure you exercise safely, so don’t skip replacing cables and bands.

Tip #3: Have Regular Inspections

While most gym equipment is rugged, that doesn’t mean it is indestructible. Therefore, once per month, have a detailed inspection, looking for wear and tear. Look for cracks and scratches, especially on cables and bars. Also, if you are deadlifting, check for floor damage underneath the mat. Notice any bends on the machines. The sooner you notice the damage, the cheaper the fix will be, not to mention that you will prevent injuries.

Conclusion

Gym equipment maintenance cost drops with better quality fitness equipment, simply because you don’t have to do it that often. If you want to buy the best gym and fitness equipment in Ireland, Strength & Fitness is the place to go.
